Tips for keeping your incense burning safely and efficiently

In my years of burning incense, I have had the unfortunate experience with a number of incenses that simply did not burn correctly. Sometimes it was due to poor quality ingredients or perhaps mixing incompatible ingredients in an incense blend. However, many times it can be directly attributed to a lack of understanding of how to safely and efficiently burn incense.

Much like cooking, there are a few simple tricks you can employ when working with all types of incense from the simplest stick or cone to high-quality Japanese Kodo style hand-crafted incenses.

In this article, we will discuss some basic safety rules for burning incense as well as some important tips regarding the proper use and storage methods for your favorite scented sticks, cones, and powdered resins.

Burning incense properly can be quite simple. Here are 2 basic tips that I have compiled over the years that will help you get the full enjoyment from your favorite quality incenses.

  1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLACE TO BURN YOUR INCENSE –

Where you choose to burn your incense is just as important as choosing which incense to burn. Keep in mind, there are two basic choices when burning incense; open-air burning or contained burning within an incense burner or electric incense heater. If you are going with open-air burning, you should always make sure there is adequate ventilation and no sources of flame nearby nor should it be able to come into contact with highly flammable items such as furniture or drapes.

  1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT TYPE OF INCENSE FOR YOUR SITUATION –

Once you know the proper place to burn your incense, next consider how long you will be burning the incense before extinguishing it. If it is a short session, or you are on vacation and don’t have access to an incense burner, then stick incense is the best option. If you will be burning your incense for longer periods of time, then consider cone or powdered incense.
