A New Home But Improvements Needed – Siding with the Siding Experts
I’ve never been an expert in home improvements. Just ask the wife who jokes with people that I don’t know the difference between a regular screwdriver and a Phillips. (I usually say the “first one has orange juice in it, doesn’t it…”)
Seriously if my handyman skills are a bit lacking I’m a dab hand at research. Let me explain.
We’d just moved into a new home in the San Antonio area from New Hampshire – a big change due to work. We loved the new environment but it had been obvious since the get-go that we had to do something to improve the exterior of the property – it’s the first thing you or guests notice after all.
The siding (or wall cladding as I was to discover, new words for this guy) was the issue that needed to be addressed.
Research turned up a number of options but one that really caught my eye was a firm of siding experts in San Antonio that boasted of having remodelled 200K homes over the last 30+ years. That’s a lot of experience and expertise and I think we made a wise choice.
We went for something called vertical siding that I have to admit lends a modern and sleek touch to our property. It’s durable too, made by a company called James Hardie I believe.

Of course, siding is more than just about aesthetics – you have to consider that it is a protective layer for the skin of your house. You wouldn’t wear clothes with holes would you? And you want not only to look your best but have functionality. Right?
The installation guys and the quote told us how the different climate from where we hailed and where we had moved – boy, is it ever hot at times – meant that we needed different siding.
The Result:
We’re very happy with the result. Guests who have arrived for my better half’s dinner parties have remarked that our place is no longer the poor man on a swanky block, or words to that effect.
That has meant my wife is now more confident to leave me some responsibility in the home improvement domain.
And the wisecracks about screwdrivers are on the back burner!
