Cling to The Iron Rod: 5 Reasons You Should and 4 Ways to Do It

“Cling to the Iron Rod.” This phrase is found in the scriptures of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is often repeated by church leaders. What does it mean? Why is it important? And how can we do it? This article will discuss five reasons why you should cling to the iron rod and four ways that you can do it!

The iron rod is a symbol of the word of God. It is also a symbol of strength and safety. The scriptures tell us that we must hold fast to the rod to avoid being lost in darkness (see Alma 12:27; Helaman 16:16) and against the current (see D&C 123:12).

Church leaders have often spoken about the importance of clinging to the iron rod. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “My young friends, may I suggest that you make it your life goal to stay close to the Iron Rod-to the standards of gospel living” (Gordon B. Hinckley, “The Quest for Excellence,” Ensign, Nov. 1984, 86). Elder Neal A. Maxwell taught, “In our voyage through mortality’s storms and darkness, the ‘iron rod’ is the gospel of Jesus Christ-precious truths which, when grasped, will lead us unerringly along” (“The Caring Society,” Ensign, Nov. 1987, 17).

So why is it so important that we cling to the iron rod? Here are five reasons:

First, because the scriptures tell us to, the word of God is clear that we must hold fast to the rod to avoid being lost (see Alma 12:27; Helaman 16:16).

Second, it is a symbol of strength and safety. In a world full of darkness and danger, we need all the strength and safety we can get. Holding fast to the rod will help us find our way back to the path of safety.

Third, it is a symbol of the word of God. The iron rod represents the gospel of Jesus Christ-the truths that will lead us safely home.

Fourth, because it is a guide for our journey, as we cling to the rod, it will help us find our way through the darkness and danger of mortality.

Fifth, it will help us stay on the path leading to eternal life. This is the most important reason of all! If we want to return to live with our Heavenly Father someday, we must hold fast to the gospel truths that will lead us there.

So how can we cling to the iron rod? Here are four ways:

First, by studying the scriptures. When we understand the truths of the gospel, it will be easier for us to hold fast to them.

Second, by living according to the standards of the gospel. We will be more likely to hold fast to them as we live our lives per gospel principles.

Third, by praying for strength and guidance. As we ask Heavenly Father for help, He will give us the strength we need to cling to the rod.

Fourth, by serving others. As we serve those around us, we will be reminded of our need to cling to the gospel truths that can lead us back home.

If we follow these four simple steps, we can all find our way back to the path of safety and eternal life and not go against the current! So let us hold fast to the iron rod and never let go!
