Nowadays, it’s rare for two weddings to look the same. In the past, weddings were very traditional, but now, many people opt for non-traditional and often unique weddings, whether that involves having a movie theme or the bride not wearing white.

The Focus
Most weddings naturally focus on the joining of two people in marriage. However, there are some focus shifts when comparing modern and traditional weddings. For example, a more traditional wedding will focus more on the faith of the couple and the rituals that are involved. However, a modern wedding may have more flexible focuses without the need to adhere to social expectations.
The Venue
When it comes to traditional vs modern weddings, one of the biggest differences is the type of venue. Traditional wedding venues tend to take place in a church or other kind of religious building. On the other hand, modern weddings can occur basically anywhere! For example, the venue could be an aquarium, a garden, a museum, or even in Niagara Falls. There isn’t much limit.
Of course, there are many wedding venues that bridge the gap between modern and tradition, offering opulent surroundings without any ties to religion.
The Wedding Attire
Then there’s the wedding attire. With a traditional Christian wedding, the bride typically wears a formal gown (often white). Although this differs from culture to culture. The bride will also typically wear a veil, with the groom wearing a smart suit.
With a modern wedding, there aren’t really many rules, although many couples still opt to wear a dress or suit. The bride may wear something different from white, though, perhaps choosing a green, red, purple, or even black dress for their ceremony! In some cases, where the bride and groom choose a themed wedding, they may even dress up in a costume.

The Rituals
The rituals that take place during a wedding may differ quite significantly when comparing a traditional wedding to a more modern one. Many traditional Christian weddings have set in place rituals that the bride, groom, and wedding party must follow. For example, that may include:
- Exchanging vows
- Exchanging rings
- A sermon
- Wearing a bridal veil
- Giving away
Then, with modern weddings, the couple can pick and choose which rituals they want to use (if any at all). They might like the idea of exchanging rings, for example, but decide not to have the bride given away by their father.
The Gender Roles
Traditional weddings often stick to the joining of a female bride and a male groom. Often, the bride and groom’s parties are split by gender, too, with the bridesmaids taking on board particular tasks like helping find the perfect dress, while the groom’s male party typically stays away from the planning process.
Modern weddings often do not conform to these gender roles, especially gay weddings (but many straight couples decide against typical gender roles in their wedding, too). For example, the bride or groom may choose a man of honor instead of a maid of honor.
